Category 20: Showcase Instrumental Solo

There are Five Different Age Groups in this Category.

Contestants must select two (or two sets of) original and contrasting pieces (with or without piano accompaniment) from different musical periods. ANY STANDARD REPERTOIRE will be acceptable, including Concertos, such as one or more movement(s) from a Sonata, a suite or a set of Theme & Variations. No simplified or arranged music allowed. Performance must be from memory. Contestants must be prepared to play their music entirely (without personal ‘cuts’). The judges may stop a performance at a certain point or begin a piece from a middle section, neither of which will reflect negatively on the contestants.

USOMC will assign an Official Accompanists for this event as well as for the Prizewinners Concerts if the contestants’ music calls for a piano accompaniment. The accompanist will not be judged. Teachers are not allowed to accompany their own students. There will be no exception to this rule.

The entry fee covers the Accompanist fee which include one rehearsal plus accompaniment at the competition. The Official Accompanist will be available to accompany the winners during the Prizewinners’ Concerts at an additional fee.

Please review Rule #5 & Rule #6 carefully!
If the music piece(s) does not require piano accompaniment, contestants must select No for "Require Piano Accompaniment" at registration, and the accompanist fee will be refunded to the contestant after the applications are processed.

Contestants must upload the first three pages of each piece at the time of their online application. When entering a complete Set or Suite, the first three pages of each movement must be uploaded with the entry.

USOMC reserves the right to combine or cancel events that do not have adequate entries.

Contestants must bring a copy of their music for the judges at the competition. Without proper music, the contestant will be disqualified.

After each Competition, the 1st Place Winner should immediately notify USOMC which piece /set of pieces they will perform at the Prizewinners' Concert (only one piece /one set of pieces will be allowed).
Please check carefully for the maximum time allowed for the Prizewinners' Concerts (cuts may be necessary).

Note: For the actual Competitions:
The USOMC committee has agreed to allow the contestants of Showcase Instrumental Solo to play music beyond the indicated time limit allowed for the actual Competitions. To achieve the best results (A) the time for each piece must be accurately recorded by each contestant on their entry form, which will enable the USOMC staffs to correctly estimate the length of the event – to give the judges enough time to hear the music; and (B) if there is not enough time, the judges may have to cut the pieces short, which will not reflect negatively on the contestants.
